Devil's Tooth, West of Pecos

West of Pecos is located in the Mission District of San Francisco. With this cocktail, the Devil is definitely up to his devious tricks. He first tempts you with his name in the drink. Then he charms you with ingredients such as bourbon, tangerine, ginger and vanilla. This is a well balanced, smooth and addictive cocktail. With each sip, I was thinking how can something so good, possibly be so evil? Once you've been bitten by the Devil's Tooth, you won't be able to stop at one sip let alone with just one order.

The Drink - Devil's Tooth, $11

Black Rose, West of Pecos

West of Pecos is located in the Mission District of San Francisco. I had no idea what to expect when I ordered the Black Rose. I love tequila and I like drinks with shrubs in it, so I thought, why not? I told my research partner that although it had tequila, she would not like it. Of course, she gave it a try. After her first and only sip, I was surprised that there was no immediate facial reaction. Within a millisecond, the puckered lips and cringing eyes spoke silently to me with the "I should have listened to you. You know what drinks I like and don't like". While she did not like the drink, I on the other hand enjoyed the bold and tart flavor. It's deceptive since it looks like a Coca Cola on the rocks when served. If you like shrubs in your drink, then you'll enjoy this one. If all black roses are like this, I'm happy to receive one anytime.

The Drink - Black Rose, $9
Anejo tequila, apple shrub, fernet vallet, black walnut

Pecos Punch, West of Pecos

West of Pecos is a Southwestern restaurant in the Mission District of San Francisco. After a long ride on the trail or in the urban jungle of trying to find parking in the Mission, the Pecos Punch is a refreshing light pick me up for the weary eyed traveller with the gentle sweetness from a ripe cantaloupe, the low glycemic effect of the citrusy grapefruit and a hint of basil. I just love the tin cup that this punch is served in. I can imagine this punch in a larger bowl to share with friends and scooping your next serving with the tin cup. Beware, with one too many, you may start Roy Roger's "Happy Trails to you, until we meet again...".

The Drink - Pecos Punch, $8
Blanco tequila, Aperol, cantalope,  freshly squeezed grapefruit and basil

Do-it-Yourself Lemonade, West of Pecos

West of Pecos is a Southwestern restaurant located in the Mission District of San Francisco. I just love coming across fun experiences with DIY drinks, most especially non-alcoholic ones. What a fun treat to watch my mocktail researchers try to balance the simple combination of lemon juice, simple syrup and a nice twist of pop from fizzy water to their desired level of tartness and sweetness. I wish I had taken pictures of the pucker of the lips when more simple syrup and water is needed in the tart drink, the gasp when the drink was too sweet and needed the squeeze of the lemon to balance it out, and the smiles from the laughs at the table from the fun experiments. It's such simple fun which can easily be done at home.

Happy National Lemonade Day all!

Prickly Pecos Margarita, West of Pecos

West of Pecos is a restaurant located in the Mission District of San Francisco. I am in cocktail heaven on this block of Valencia Street with West of Pecos, Locanda and Wo Hing General Store. When I saw the serrano pepper with tequila in the Prickly Pear Margarita, I knew that's what I had to order. I had no idea that a prickly pear was a raspberry colored fruit. So when the pink cocktail arrived, I was a bit skeptical. I honestly don't know why. This drink is my type of drink with a slight hint of sweet and lots of heat. I started to get worried when my lips started tingling after 3 sips. But luckily the heat didn't get stronger. The lovely color from the prickly pear just makes this drink an all around intense flirty drink. I am definitely not one to order or even drink pretty pink drinks, but the Prickly Pear Margarita will be permanently on my list of exceptions to a rule. I'm headed back soon to try some of the other interesting concoctions on their menu like the Sidewinder, Pecolada, and Cortez the Killer. Of course, I wouldn't try all in one night, could I?

The Drink - Prickly Margarita, $11
blanco tequila, fresh lime, agave, serrano pepper, and prickly pear juice
