Eve's Abandon at RN74 in San Francisco

RN74 is a Michael Mina restaurant located in the South of Market neighborhood of San Francisco. I've had many memorable nights with good friends at RN74 since it first opened. In fact, I am surprised this is the first RN74 cocktail that I am posting. Earlier this particular evening, I attended the sneak peak at RN74 for The Company Bar and Kitchen which is slated to open late Summer. My research partner is a big whiskey drinker and opted for the Eve's Abandon cocktail. When I took a sip, I wanted to abandon my drink and have her's instead. I did like mine, but I liked the Eve's Abandon more.

The Drink - Eve's Abandon, $10

La Bonne Vie at Rickhouse in San Francisco

Rickhouse is located in Union Square in San Francisco. La Bonne Vie translates from French to English as The Good Life. I ventured off to Rickhouse a few weeks ago when it was unusually hot in San Francisco. Now that the San Francisco summer has begun with the fog and drizzle, today I am thinking about how lucky we were for that fabulous weather. I love the description in the cocktail menu for this drink, "We will save you any explanation as to why it is named so, but we can reveal that after a couple of sips,  you will stop wondering why." It's the good life when it's a beautiful day in San Francisco and you pass the afternoon away at Rickhouse. And with this drink, you get to chose the base spirit of gin or vodka.

The Drink - La Bonne Vie

Roffignac Cocktail at Hard Water in San Francisco

Hardwater is located in Pier 3 along the Embarcadero in San Francisco. As my research partner and I were drinking through Hard Water's cocktail menu, we were both intrigued with the red hembarig syrup. When we asked the server, they said it's a German syrup. Since neither of us had a drink with the ingredient, I knew I had to try the cocktail. I am so glad I did. This is a refreshing tangy cocktail with citrus hints.
Now a few weeks later since my visit to Hard Water, I wanted to find out more about the German syrup. There isn't much about it (not even in Wikipedia). Per the following article link, it's a raspberry vinegar syrup (Roffignac cocktail and the red hembarig syrup). Who knew such mystery could revolve around a cocktail?

The Drink - Roffignac Cocktail, $10
Rittenhouse 100 rye, lemon, grapefruit, red hembarig syrup, soda water

The Lola at Blackbird in San Francisco

Lola is a Spanish form of Dolores. I had just seen my Lola Dolores the day before at her daughter's wedding a few weeks ago and was inspired to order this. I knew of the sexy and strong association with the name Lola. However, I didn't know about the Spanish origin meaning sorrow. This drink definitely has a strong spirit base from both the tequila and mezcal. But is also shows it's sexy side with white tea, King's Ginger and Grapefruit Bitters. This cocktail is definitely not for the weak at heart. This was my last drink of the evening from a Sunday crawl a few weekends ago. So can you guess what song was running through my head on the way to dinner at Kpop. Here's a hint, "Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl".

The Kokomo at Blackbird in San Francisco

Blackbird is a wonderful neighborhood bar located in the Castro in San Francisco. I spent a a few days in April in Hawaii. When I saw the ingredients in the Kokomo cocktail, I knew it would transport me to the island paradise. The rum, coconut water, orgeat and the tiki bitters teased me for a taste of the islands. As expected, this cocktail did not disappoint. Head to Blackbird for a Kokomo if you want to  reminisce moments from your tropical travels.

The Sumo Wrestler at Blackbird in San Francisco

Blackbird, in the Castro neighborhood of San Francisco, was our 3rd stop on a bar crawl.  I haven't been to Blackbird since it opened in 2009. Within a nano second of viewing the cocktail menu, my research partner declared, "I want a Sumo Wrestler". Did I have the heart to tell it that Evan Williams was bourbon? Of course not because I wanted to try it too with the bourbon and yuzu(Japanese citrus). Wow, what a tasty cocktail. The yuzu adds complexity to this cocktail. You will find yourself pinned to  the floor in the doyho ring with one too many of theis delicious Sumo Wrestler. Trust me, it's hard to stop at just one.

I love the tag line on the Blackbird website, "Drink like a horse for the price of a bird". That about sums it up. It will not take me another three years to return to this place. I love everything about it: the drinks, the crowd, the vibe and the savvy bartenders.

English Breakfast at Residence Bar in San Francisco

The Residence Bar is located in Duboce Triangle in San Francisco. It's tea time and my research partner is having an English Breakfast. Since this was an impromptu stop on a mini bar crawl, my partner was looking for something light. The cucumber lemon spa drink seemed like the perfect choice. But she'd never had Pimm's. I said "Order it! You'll love it." So did she like it? Yep, it was sipped away with the blink of an eye.

Now where are the dainty finger sandwiches, scones and crumpets to along with this afternoon tea?

Mexican Radio at The Alembic in San Francisco

For Cinco de Mayo, I headed to the Alembic Bar in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco in search of a cocktail to celebrate. I was excited to see the Mexican Radio cocktail name on the menu and duly ordered it. The Alembic's cocktail menu is always a fun read. Catchy cocktail names gets me to look at the ingredients. An interesting story to go along with the name and the ingredients just adds to the experience and is a conversation starter. I loved this Mexican Radio. On this station did I hear a song from a mariachi band, the current popular boy or girl band or a Latin ballad after a few of these? I can't remember, but all I know is that this Mexican Radio is #1. I'll be back for another...soon.

A belated Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Riding With Death at the Residence Bar

The Residence Bar and Lounge is in the Duboce Triangle neighborhood of San Francisco. I was walking on my way to Churchill Bar when I saw The Residence door open. It's been on my radar to try since it opened in 2010, but I'd never been. So I decided to take a look at their cocktail menu. When I saw a lot of the drinks were pretty heavy for a Sunday afternoon, I started walking out the door. I am so glad that the bartender said "C'mon, give us a try." With no one else in the bar, my research partner and I headed straight for the bar stools. Once I read the cocktail title, Riding With Death, I knew what I was going to order. What a great cocktail to start off a late afternoon. I love the color in this drink from the Campari and perhaps the grapefruit juice. You surely are Riding With Death with one too many of this cocktail.

At the Residence Bar, sit back and relax at one of the comfy couches in the lounge or pull up a seat at the bar. Either way, you know that you will be having a delicious cocktail.

La Arma at Padrecito in San Francisco

Padrecito is located in the Cole Valley neighborhood of San Francisco. It has quickly become one of my favorite places in San Francisco to enjoy a cocktail. When dessert time came, I asked which cocktail would pair best with the churros. The server came back and said the La Arma. I usually enjoy anejo tequila straight, however in this case, I enjoyed it even more with the Churros. Per Google translate, La Arma means the weapon in Spanish. And yes, it is a dangerous weapon when paired with the Churros served with a marscapone coffee cream. The smooth finish and added flavor from the coffee liquor, kept me sipping for more. When it was all gone, I wanted more. Mmm, Mmm, Mmm....I surrender to La Arma!

A Campos Cooler at Rickhouse in San Francisco

Rickhouse is located a few blocks from Union Square in San Francisco. I wandered the blocks around Union Square trying to figure out which place to go to. It's been a while since I'd been to Rickhouse, so I decided to head over. For those of you who live in the SF Bay Area, you know that yesterday in San Francisco was unusually hot. By the time I got to Rickhouse, I wanted something to quench my thirst. I  first ordered the La Bonne Vie from the one page menu. I loved that cocktail, but I needed something more. When I asked to see the cocktail menu again, they gave me a binder. I should have asked for the full menu before I ordered from their one page summary. The full menu is broken down into cocktail types like highballs, swizzles, crustas and more. I wanted to try the Mariachi (mezcal cocktail) but with the nearly unbearable heat in SF I opted for the Campos Cooler.  Boy it hit the spot. It was a light and refreshing twist on a margarita. Definitely a spa cocktail in a glass with the cucumber and ginger. I can't wait to return to try more drinks in the cocktail binder.

The Drink - Campos Cooler, $10
Cucumber infused tequila, fresh lemon juice, agave nectar, ginger and bitters.

The little story on the cocktail menu for this drink sold me.  "As cool and refreshing as the Sea of Cortez on a sunny afternoon - it is the sort of beverage that exists solely to wistfully whisk you up. Somehow it manages to do so just as quickly as it could send you back from whence you came."

Nuestra Paloma, Beretta

Beretta is an Italian restaurant located in the Mission District of San Francisco. It's been a while since I've enjoyed a drink and meal at Beretta. I'm so glad that I recently had time to stop by. For the last few weeks, I've been addicted to grapefruit cocktails. So when I saw a Paloma on the menu, I knew that's what I was going to order. I love Beretta's version of the classic Paloma with the elderflower twist. The Nuestra Paloma was fragrant, floral, citrusy, well in one word amazing. The drink was finished way to fast.

How are you going to enjoy Cinco de Mayo this weekend? With a Margarita, Paloma, Tequila, Mezcal, Tecate or a Modelo? Whatever way, share it with us.

The Company Bar and Kitchen #cocktailcorner

Last night I attended a sneak peak called #cocktailcorner for Michael Mina's new Indian restaurant opening in San Francisco this summer called The Company Bar and Kitchen. Sommelier extraordinaire Rajat Parr and cocktail master Carlos Splendorino were there to share the concept and inspiration for the new gathering space opening on Steuart Street late summer. The team teased the guests with four cocktails and three bites. We were all excited about each of the cocktails and each bite.

Cocktail #1 - Summer Punch with gin, grapefruit and basil. We were handed the drink as we walked into the back room at RN74 where #cocktailcorner took place. My date for the evening doesn't like gin or grapefruit. However, they were surprised how good the summer punch was. I wish I had taken a picture of the cocktail. I guess I will have to wait until the opening to enjoy this again. In the meantime, I may try to make it at home.

Cocktail #2 - "So Shiva, a Witch Doctor and a Monk Walk into a Bar..." with Cilantro-Infused Green Chartreuse, Rangpur Juice, Falernum, Kaffir Lime. I usually chose cocktails with fun and interesting names. It's a great way to start a conversation whether you know all the people at your table or meeting people for the first time. The team encouraged everyone to share their experience on social media. Instantly everyone started taking pics of each drink and bite. Next we were all excited about the citrus aroma of the drink we are all wondering what rangpur juice was. Next thing, several people were on their smartphone looking it up. Rangpur is a citrus similar to a mandarin and lime. I couldn't get enough of this cocktail.

Bite #1 - Fire and Ice, 'Papdi' Chaat, Tandoori Paneer
The spoonful of Fire and Ice was paired with Cocktail #2 above. I wish I could have had another few spoonfuls.

After the first bite, the seating changed. Based on playing card under the menu, you had to go to a designated table.  I had spades so luckily got to stay put.

Cocktail #3 - The Company Fashioned with Anrut Whiskey, Tamarind Syrup, Plum Bitter. Wow, I love The Company's twist on an Old Fashion. One of my new neighbors said they usually not a whiskey drinker but this cocktail is delicious. I appreciate well made whiskey cocktails. This was not only beautiful but was well balanced and had a smooth finish. I wish I could have another!

Bite #2 - Oysters and Spice with Crispy Poha-Crusted Oysters, Arugula-Pistachio Pesto. Another wow for me. Another tablemate mentioned they usually don't like oysters, but the tiny morsel was amazing.

Cocktail #4 - The Genius with Neutral Gran Spirit, Coconut Orgeat, Strawberry and Lime. Carlos Splendorino shows his cocktail genius with this cocktail shot. This is a great dessert in a glass cocktail.

Bite #3 Tadoor and Raj with Mustard Shrimp, Beans 'Poriyal'
This last bite left me wanting more. When the server came around, all at the table were wondering how to eat it. One guy said, just pop it in all at once. My pappadam bite was a little too big, so I bit around it carefully. It didn't work out too well, but at least I wasn't the only one that made a mess at the table.

So how did I find out about the event? Twitter through a retweet by @MichaelMinaSF. It was nice to hear different neighbors at my table say they don't typically eat or drink different ingredients. All of us got outside of our comfort zone during the evening. Every single offering in the evening were unique. Thank you The Company Bar and Kitchen for a wonderful evening of drinks, food and The Company!

Like them on Facebook TheCompanyBarandKitchen or on Twitter @TheCompanySF so perhaps you will be as lucky as I was to sip and taste their offerings before they open. I am looking forward to The Company Bar and Kitchen to open this summer. I specifically can't wait to see the live bar with neutral grain spirits in action this summer. Well made artisan cocktails paired with Indian food, how can you not look forward to this?

Mint Julep, Dixie

Dixie is a restaurant located in the Presidio National Park in San Francisco. With the Kentucky Derby coming up this weekend, some of you may be looking for places that serve a good Mint Julep.
